Why this matters

Your students and your workers already use AI. There is no going back, and AI detectors do not work, the regulators now say so themselves.

So the real question is not how to catch AI. It is this: for each part of a unit, does the skill still have to be shown without help, or is using AI well now part of the job? Answer that honestly, part by part, and your assessment stays defensible without pretending the world has not changed.

That is the whole brief below. We do not guess. We look at how the actual work is changing, then make the call.

Resist or Integrate, part by part

This unit certifies someone who uses advanced critical thinking to review and improve work practices, using analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The real job is a loop: establish where critical thinking belongs in the work, analyse existing or proposed practices to find their limitations, gather information, reason to solutions using critical thinking concepts, build a proposal through a decision-making framework, present and justify the decision to stakeholders, then reflect, seek feedback and plan how to keep improving. It is applied reasoning and judgement work, not recall, and the quality of the thinking is the whole point.

A subtle and genuinely mixed unit, and one where AI creates an unusual authenticity risk. Generative AI now produces fluent, plausible critical-thinking prose on demand, so an artifact-only reasoning task can look competent while proving little about the learner's own thinking. Information gathering and drafting options integrate. The reasoning, evaluation, decision-making and reflection at the heart of the unit stay AI-resistant, and the assessable act is the learner's judgement over the tool.

Establish the role of critical thinking (Resist). Identifying what critical thinking is, evaluating where it applies and articulating its benefits is conceptual understanding the learner must own. AI generates fluent, plausible answers here on demand, so this stays shown unaided, with only the lightest benefit statement being lower stakes.
Gather information on work practices (Integrate). Locating information about work practices is now AI-assisted everyday work through search copilots and synthesis tools. Fighting that is not credible, so integrate it and assess the learner sourcing, verifying and selecting the information and catching fabrication, not the retrieval itself.
Analyse limitations and reason to solutions (Resist). Analysing practices to find their limitations and reasoning to a defensible solution is the core assessable judgement of the unit. AI can produce convincing analysis, which is exactly the authenticity risk, so this is the part that must be protected and shown unaided.
Develop and present the proposal (Split). AI can draft the proposal document and surface candidate options, so integrate that idea generation and drafting. Applying the decision-making framework, owning the reasoning, and justifying the decision live to stakeholders is unaided judgement and is the natural verification anchor.
Develop a critical thinking mindset (Resist). Reviewing decision-making, seeking feedback and identifying self-development are personal and reflective acts, and AI-fabricated reflection is a direct authenticity risk. Only the mechanical structuring of a future-improvement plan is a light integrate point where the priorities chosen stay the learner's.

How AI is reshaping this work in Australia

Jobs and Skills Australia's Gen AI capacity study, Our Gen AI Transition (Aug 2025), finds the technology augments rather than replaces most work, and that human skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and communication become more valuable as routine cognitive work is offloaded to AI. Clerical, administrative and entry-level roles are the most exposed, which is exactly where this unit sits.

The Future Skills Organisation, the Jobs and Skills Council that owns this BSB unit, states in its Top 10 Insights 2025 that critical thinking becomes more important as AI handles routine tasks, and that human employability skills must be treated as equal priority to technical AI skills. The body responsible for the training package is signalling that this competency matters more, not less.

Peer-reviewed research is the crux of the authenticity risk. Lee and colleagues' study of knowledge workers, The Impact of Generative AI on Critical Thinking (CHI 2025, Microsoft Research and Carnegie Mellon), finds higher confidence in gen AI is associated with less critical thinking, and workers self-report reduced cognitive effort across analysis, synthesis and evaluation when they lean on the tool. This is an international source, flagged as such and used because it is a globally authoritative peer-reviewed study with no direct Australian equivalent yet.

Because gen AI can generate persuasive analysis, options and even self-reflection on request, a take-home critical-thinking artifact is now highly outsourceable: the polished reasoning on the page may be the tool's, not the learner's. The exposure is not in the topic, it is in the fact that the evidence of thinking is the easiest thing for a tool to fake convincingly.

On assessment specifically, TEQSA's Enacting assessment reform in a time of artificial intelligence (Sept 2025) states plainly that detection alone cannot assure integrity, that redesign around at least one secure point is the answer, and that evaluative judgement and critical thinking are the capabilities to protect. It is higher-education guidance but it cross-applies directly to VET assessment design.

Where the current assessment is exposed

The exposure in a unit like this is the artifact-only take-home: submit a written analysis of a work practice, a proposal, and a reflection. Because generative AI now produces plausible analysis, options and even self-reflection on request, those documents can read as competent while proving little about the learner's own thinking, and an AI detector will not fix that. The fix is not a cleverer brief. It is to keep the documents but move the evidence for the resist parts, the analysis, the reasoning to a solution, the decision justification and the reflection, to a minimum-sufficient verification point that works online, such as a short unscripted oral where the learner defends their reasoning.
