The call
Resist or Integrate, part by part
This unit certifies a frontline health or community services worker who communicates with clients, colleagues, management and other providers under direct or indirect supervision. The real job is relational and accountable: use verbal and non-verbal communication to be understood and show respect, listen and confirm the person has understood, collaborate with colleagues and follow communication protocols, read the early signs of a difficult situation and defuse conflict, meet legal and ethical duties such as privacy, confidentiality, duty of care and mandatory reporting and escalate breaches to a supervisor, complete written and electronic workplace documentation including case notes in clear and objective language, and contribute to improving work practices. Workers may communicate face to face, in writing or through digital media.
A strongly interpersonal unit that mostly resists AI, with one sharp exception. Communicating with clients, defusing conflict and escalating concerns to a supervisor are live human performances a tool cannot do for the learner. The documentation element is where AI now bites, because AI scribes and generative tools draft case notes and workplace records across Australian health and community services. That same tool raises the unit's own privacy and confidentiality duties, so the accuracy of the record, and the privacy of client information, stay a human responsibility.

Communicate effectively with clients (Resist). Using verbal and non-verbal communication to be understood, confirming the person has understood, and listening and clarifying within confidentiality limits is a live human exchange. A learner who has a tool do this has not shown the skill, so it must be demonstrated unaided.
Collaborate with colleagues (Resist). Clarifying instructions, agreeing timeframes and following communication protocols and lines of authority is interpersonal judgement. Correct use of industry terminology in digital messages is a light AI touchpoint, but the competency is using the terminology correctly, not generating the text.
Manage constraints and defuse conflict (Resist). Reading the early signs of a difficult situation and defusing or resolving conflict is live de-escalation. AI cannot perform it on the learner's behalf, so this stays observed and unaided.
Report problems and meet legal and ethical duties (Resist). Complying with legal and ethical responsibilities and referring breaches, adverse events and unresolved conflict to the right people is accountable human escalation. It is needed most when a tool is wrong or absent, so it resists.
Complete workplace documentation (Split). Drafting case notes and workplace records is the one AI-saturated task here, so integrate that and assess the worker's judgement over the draft. But verifying the record is accurate and objective, and protecting the privacy of client information, stays human. OAIC guidance says sensitive health information should not be fed to public AI and that AI output must be checked for accuracy.
Contribute to continuous improvement (Resist). Voicing improvements, modelling changed work practices and seeking feedback on skill development is reflective and interpersonal. AI plays no substitutive part, so the evidence is the learner's own.
