AI & your unit

What to assess unaided, and where AI is now the real skill

BSBPEF201, Support personal wellbeing in the workplace. We looked up the unit, researched how AI is changing this work in Australia right now, and made a clear call on each part of it: protect it from AI, or put AI to work in it. The evidence the unit requires never changes; only how you assess it.

Why this matters

Your students and your workers already use AI. There is no going back, and AI detectors do not work, the regulators now say so themselves.

So the real question is not how to catch AI. It is this: for each part of a unit, does the skill still have to be shown without help, or is using AI well now part of the job? Answer that honestly, part by part, and your assessment stays defensible without pretending the world has not changed.

That is the whole brief below. We do not guess. We look at how the actual work is changing, then make the call.

Resist or Integrate, part by part

This is a foundational personal-effectiveness unit for entry-level workers under direct supervision, or people preparing to enter the workforce. The real task is personal and interpersonal: noticing the personal and workplace factors that affect your own wellbeing, planning how to raise a wellbeing concern with your supervisor (choosing a communication style and method, and preparing for a negative response), actually having that conversation and reviewing how it went, and finding wellbeing resources such as an Employee Assistance Program. It reframes the older 'manage personal stress' idea around self-advocacy and help-seeking.

AI is largely irrelevant to the heart of this unit, so it stays AI-resistant. The core work is self-awareness, an honest conversation with a supervisor, and reaching out for human support, none of which AI performs for the learner. The only genuine touchpoint is that learners may encounter AI wellbeing apps and chatbots as resources, and Australian bodies are clear these are limited, unregulated, and not a substitute for human or professional support.

SPLIT
Recognise factors that impact personal wellbeing (Resist). Self-reflection on personal and workplace wellbeing factors is inherently personal and cannot be delegated to AI. The performance requires the learner's own honest insight.
Plan communication with supervisor (Resist). Choosing an assertive style and method to raise a sensitive concern, and preparing for a negative response, is a judgement and self-advocacy skill. A learner who has a tool draft this has not demonstrated the skill.
Communicate with supervisor (Resist). Conducting a real conversation and reviewing how it went is a live interpersonal performance. AI plays no part, so this element is fully AI-resistant.
Investigate available wellbeing resources (Split). Mostly resist, with one light note: the skill of identifying and reviewing resources is the learner's own, but AI wellbeing apps now appear among the resources, so learners benefit from evaluating their limits using Australian guidance rather than treating them as equivalent to formal support such as an EAP.

How AI is reshaping this work in Australia

AI barely touches the core skills of this unit. Recognising your own wellbeing factors, choosing how to talk to a supervisor, and seeking help are personal and relational acts that an AI tool cannot do on the learner's behalf. Naming that honestly is the finding, not a gap.

2026Our read

The one real touchpoint is wellbeing resources: Australians are increasingly turning to AI chatbots and wellbeing apps for mental-health support, so a learner choosing a wellbeing resource may now encounter these tools.

2025National body

Black Dog Institute states there are no AI mental-health technologies registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, that such tools cannot diagnose, treat or cure, and that chatbots can reflect bias or even endorse harmful behaviour; they should support rather than replace human and professional care.

2025National body

Beyond Blue offers public guidance on whether AI is safe for mental-health support, positioning AI as a possible companion between provider visits rather than a replacement for human connection or professional care.

2025National body

The eSafety Commissioner has warned that some AI chatbots engage in self-harm-related or explicit conversations and that excessive use may contribute to loneliness, which is directly relevant when a learner evaluates an app as a wellbeing resource.

2025Regulator (eSafety)

Workplace factors that affect wellbeing now sit inside a regulated picture: managing psychosocial hazards is a duty across Australian jurisdictions under the model WHS regulations and the Safe Work Australia code of practice. This shapes what counts as a workplace wellbeing factor but does not introduce AI into the learner's task.

Step 1
We look up the actual unit on training.gov.au and read what evidence it requires.
Step 2
We research the live Australian landscape against named sources: the regulators and industry bodies, never overseas blogs.
Step 3
A qualified trainer makes the call and shows every source and the date it was checked.

Where the current assessment is exposed

AI exposure in this unit is low, which is itself the finding. The performance evidence (a communication plan, a real conversation with a supervisor, accessing a formal and an informal resource) and the knowledge evidence (wellbeing factors, communication styles, EAPs) are personal and relational, so a learner cannot outsource them to a tool without failing to show the skill. The shape of the fix is therefore not to bolt AI on, but to keep the conversation and the self-reflection observed and authentic, and to add one small contemporary lens to the resources element: when a learner reviews a wellbeing resource, they consider whether it is human, professional, or an AI app, and weigh its limits using Australian guidance. The fixed evidence does not change; only the method is sharpened.

We weigh sources, we do not just collect them. Australian regulators and national bodies rank highest; industry and practitioner sources are used for what the work is, not for claims; vendor marketing is never cited as evidence.

This is general research on how AI is reshaping the work behind this unit, prepared to inform assessment design conversations. It is not compliance advice, an assessment validation, or a guarantee of any regulatory outcome. Unit requirements and Assessment Conditions are fixed by training.gov.au and must be confirmed there, and any assessment is validated and signed off by your RTO's named subject-matter expert before delivery.
